On completion of the course students will have covered:

  • Understand the terms combustion, Pyrolysis, hot gases and limits of flammability
  • Understand the implication and hazards of these, in association with compartment fire fighting
  • Observe the combustion of smoke and the ignition of a flammable gas through its flammable range
  • Identify the signs of a flashover
  • Identify the signs of a backdraught
  • Observe the development of a compartment fire and the effect construction has on that fire
  • Understand the limitations of fire ground PPE
  • Carry out correct door entry procedures
  • Implement control measures to protect themselves from the effects of fire
  • Control and extinguish fire

To introduce firefighters to the burning characteristics, development and behaviour of fire. To provide firefighters with an understanding in how to recognise and assess the risks involved when dealing with compartment fires.

On completion of the course Students will receive a certificate of achievement.


Due to the physical nature of this course, students are required to demonstrate prior to attendance that they have been medically assessed and deemed fit and able to undertake course activities.
